Youth worker wanted to build on success of Barrow youth centre

Two charities have joined forces to recruit a full time youth worker to build on the success of a Barrow youth centre.

The Sir John Fisher Foundation and youth charity Brathay Trust want to hear from anyone with experience to take forward projects to help youngsters in Barrow who are at risk of child sexual exploitation (CSE) and youth crime. The projects also support struggling youngsters to do well in school, as well as families and those leaving care.

As Scott Umpleby from Brathay explained:
“Brathay has worked with vulnerable children and young people from the Furness area for many years.

“In September 2015 we opened a youth centre and office in Abbey Road, Barrow so we could do more for local communities.

“On the back of the success of this, and our Focus on Furness appeal which has raised over £32,000 in two years, we want to do even more.

“We are delighted to have the support of the Sir John Fisher Foundation, who are funding the salary costs for this critical worker over the next three years. In their first year we hope an exceptional individual, who is totally committed to the Barrow community, will run projects directly supporting 80 vulnerable young people as well as helping 200 more youngsters” Mr Umpleby added.

Anyone interested in finding out more should visit . The closing date for applications is Monday 17th July.

Brathay’s mission is to improve the life chances of children, young people and families by inspiring them to engage positively in their communities. The charity works with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, helping them to develop the confidence, motivation and skills they need to unlock their potential and make positive choices in their lives.

Each year Brathay provides personal and social development for around 7,000 children and young people, often combining weekly sessions in their home communities with day challenges and/or a residential experience at Brathay Hall near Ambleside.
